audiophile sub amp : Alpine V-Power MRP-M450 - Amplifier - 1-channel

Alpine rates this amp at 220 watts into 4 ohms, which is sheer fantasy, hence the docked star. I think of this as a 50 watt mono amp. That said, it is a wonderful 50 watt mono amp, with flexible inputs, crossover, and controls, vanishingly low noise and distortion, easy installation, and a very clean look. It runs cool on my single 4 ohm sub and sounds wonderful. I would recommend it for anyone who values sound quality over volume.

If you have a cd player with built in crossover, like the Alpine CDE-9873, this amp is the perfect companion for it. With the 9873's 12 watts crossed over at 160 hz and sent to the front speakers, this amp lets me use the sub to handle all the bass. In my extended cab Toyota truck, setting the low-pass crossover in the amp to 100 hz produced the best sound. The flexible controls made this very easy to set and to experiment with.

Physically, the amp is too large; much larger than it needs to be. Look inside, and you'll see a lot of hot air. Perhaps test subjects were disturbed by the original palm-sized prototype, and demanded the 12" x 12" footprint. I think it would be easier to install if it were 6" x 6".

This amp makes it easy to assemble a simple, exquisite, actively crossed over stereo very cheaply, and I love mine.

If you have many subs, and like to push your amps hard, this is not the amp for you.
